Continental Develops Multimedia System For Fiat Group Automobiles





Technology at its best: Continental develops the new infotainment system for Fiat Group Automobiles.


Regensburg/ Wetzlar (Germany). The international automotive supplier Continental was commissioned by Fiat Group Automobiles to develop a new infotainment system. The system will be launched as a radio in its basic form but also as an advanced multimedia system (head unit).

The first Fiat model equipped with the Continental infotainment system will be the brand new Fiat 500 L, which is being produced in Serbia. The Continental infotainment system will then be rolled out across further models from Fiat/Chrysler.

“The order to develop an infotainment system for the Fiat/Chrysler model range worldwide is a clear sign of trust by the international automobile manufacturer in Continental’s innovative capacity, especially in the area of infotainment,” explains Kieran O’Sullivan, head of the Continental Business Unit Infotainment & Connectivity.

“Millions of vehicles are already connected with the outside world on the basis of our systems. For Fiat Group Automobiles, we are once again implementing the current market requirements in a highly competitive way on a standardized platform, with a focus on an ergonomic user interface for the latest functions in infotainment technology,” O’Sullivan continued.

The hardware and the possible functions
The head unit will start series production in July 2012. With this new system, which began development in December 2010, the driver has access to analogue and digital radio or navigation functions on a 5 inch touch screen. There is also an option to connect digital music sources via USB and to use the hands-free function for smartphones through a bluetooth-interface. The new head unit uses the Microsoft operating system Windows Embedded Automotive and features text-to-speech as well as voice recognition, allowing drivers to utilize functions of the infotainment-system without taking their hands off the steering wheel.

The Continental head unit is designed to allow for new software functions to be installed on the system after the start of series production. Thus the system can be adjusted to the changing preferences of the driver over the vehicle’s complete life-cycle. Additionally the system defines new ecological benchmarks: the Fiat Group’s eco:Drive, which will be integrated into the infotainment-system, can help the driver contribute to the reduction of consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 12% through analyzing driving parameters in real time (acceleration, deceleration, gear shift change and cruise speed) and giving suggestions for more eco friendly driving.

International development and production
The new infotainment system was developed at Continental locations in Wetzlar (Germany), Regensburg (Germany), Deer Park (USA), as well as Guadalajara (Mexico) and Singapore. For Fiat/Chrysler the production began in July 2012 in Brandys (Czech Republic), and will at a later date also take place at the Continental plant in Nogales, Mexico.

Today the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued one recall.  It's for a child seat that does not restrain a child in a crash.  If your child seat is affected, take actions suggested in the recall.

Consequence:
 In the event of a crash, the seat occupant may not be properly restrained, possibly resulting in injury.
Remedy:

Delphi Launches Remanufactured Turbochargers with Latest Variable Technology

Warwick, UK – Delphi Product & Service Solutions is changing the turbocharger landscape with the launch of its remanufactured turbocharger program for popular light duty vehicle diesel and petrol applications. Available now, this programme provides the aftermarket an OE quality, green alternative in turbocharger replacement that works with both old and new technologies.


The current trend for engine downsizing to meet the latest emission standards, while still providing the customer with fuel economy and performance means a dramatic growth in production of diesel and petrol turbochargers. For the aftermarket, this represents a significant growth opportunity. Today, the market is predominantly serviced through new units, and is led by many turbocharger manufacturers and distributors operating a new-only policy when replacing failed variable geometry turbochargers due to the specialist nature of the repair.

Stringent Testing
All parts replaced on Delphi remanufactured turbochargers have undergone stringent testing to ensure they perform to OE specifications. During the remanufacturing process, the replacement components endure almost 30 different quality controls before the complete unit is provided a seal of approval.


Launch covers key European applications and training
Delphi’s initial launch covers key European applications, whether diesel or petrol. Rapid range expansion will increase parc coverage to 80 percent of the top failing models.


In conjunction with the product launch, Delphi has developed a hands-on training course for technicians detailing the principles of operations for turbochargers and the surrounding system components. The course includes best practices for diagnosing and identifying turbocharger failures, such as boost pressure and oil damage, as well as proper maintenance and installation techniques.
Delphi is also working towards the introduction of additional diagnostic support on its DS series for technicians diagnosing potential turbocharger failures. This solution will help pinpoint where in the intake circuit a fault has occurred as a turbocharger fault code may be caused by a faulty air flow meter, EGR valve or air leak.

Recalls Of The Day, August 25, 2012

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issues three recalls.  One is for a possible fire.  The second is for poor windshield visibility.  The last is for air bags that may not deploy properly in a crash.

 A direct short may ignite the fan housing, shroud and surrounding components, causing a vehicle fire.
Remedy:

 General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2012 Chevrolet Sonic vehicles manufactured from May 5, 2011, through February 24, 2012. These vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 104, "Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems." The windshield wiper washer hose on these vehicles may separate from the washer fluid reservoir. If this occurs, washer fluid will not be available to the windshield.
Consequence:
 A lack of washer fluid could impede the driver's view, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy:
 GM will notify owners, and dealers will secure the windshield washer hose to prevent separation, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on, or about, September 7, 2012. Owners may contact the Chevrolet owner center at 1-866-694-6546.

Diamond In The Rough

Restoring a vehicle can be a monumental task that has many rewards when the job is completed. Many enthusiasts look to restore the first vehicle they owned.  Some look for unusual vehicles such as World War II Jeeps or tanks to celebrate and preserve history.  Some people restore bicycles.  Other individuals focus on trucks.  Many restore vehicles to make a profit.

Having spent most of my life in repair shops, auto salvage yards and insurance auction yards in the Midwest I know through experience it is slim pickings when it comes to older restorable vehicles in the rust belt states.  Available vehicles need a lot of sheet metal replacement work due to rust that costs a bundle repair.  While there are always some vehicles hidden in barns that have not met the ravages of corrosion, they are rare and come with a high price.  Having said this there are some lucky individuals who purchase entire estates.  Unknown to them when they open a locked storage shed they find vehicles that have not met their demise and are in great restorable condition. 

Whenever I travel, business is my pleasure so I often hit salvage yards, auction yards and flea markets just to look for automotive treasures.  Sometimes I purchase a trinket or two.  An Arizona salvage yard just happened to be on my bucket list.

Since we reside in the Midwestern rust belt, old vehicles in good condition are nearly impossible to find.  Usually, road salt and chemicals add to Mother Nature’s ravaging rust as it gnaws away at the frame and body until the shell deteriorates to the basic ferrous materials that return a vehicle to Mother Earth.  It is Mother Nature’s way of recycling.  Additionally, salvage yards crush and shred vehicles to recycle the materials.  So, chances are very great that a historic perfectly restorable vehicle might be reincarnated into a computer cabinet, kitchen utensil or new car.

Thankfully our country has many climates.  The desert southwest offers conditions conducive for vehicle preservation.  Sure hot temperatures and blazing sun decompose interior trim and exterior paint but the body, frame and powertrain are likely in restorable condition.

During my latest expedition to the desert I found several diamonds in the rough.  One in particular caught my attention because it is next to impossible to find one in good condition in the Midwest.  My find was a 1940 Ford ½ ton Step Side pickup truck with floor mounted manual transmission and flat-head V8.  The vehicle was located at Desert Valley Auto Parts in Phoenix, Arizona. It appeared in factory original configuration.

As you may know this auto salvage yard recently began restoring vehicles on a cable television reality show, Desert Car Kings.  During the show they restore a vehicle within limited time constraints.  They go through the entire process of restoring the vehicle including the search for difficult to find parts, recruiting experts to restore certain parts of the vehicle and of course follow their own experts through the process of restoration.  During the last segment of the show the vehicle is auctioned to the highest bidder.
 
 
The roof of a 1940 pickup caught my eye above the first row of vehicles I scanned.  From about 30 yards away I could see the left door frame and roof.  The paint was nearly gone due to exposure to the blazing desert sun but I could see only surface rust.  A check of the Desert Valley Auto Parts web site on my phone found the vehicle was indeed a 1940 Ford.  Way back in the old days, Ford made some of the best commercial vehicles so I had to take a close look at this vehicle.  In the blazing 115 degree heat I made my way around some newer 1960 and 1970s vehicles and maybe a rattle snake or two but it was a necessary risk to examine this vehicle.

Upon a close look, all the sheet metal is only suffering from surface rust.  The only dent is in the left rear corner of the roof.  The cargo bed has a dent but only surface rust.  This is rare.  You could easily push a finger through the rusted sheet metal of the bed of a vehicle such as this in the Midwest.

Along the left side, the paint is faded and nearly gone.  Surface rust red is the predominate color but there are no dents or scraps.  The left quarter, fenders, running board and door are in great shape.



A look within the cab found the bench seat material cracked but in restorable condition.  The headliner is down and steering wheel materials are cracked and falling off but certainly restorable.  Even the instrument panel is in good shape with 38,000 miles displayed on the odometer.

A close look at the floor pan foot wells found the sheet metal in great condition.  No rust perforation anywhere in sight.  Even the shift knob on the shift lever is in good condition.




A look under the hood found the drive belt missing, but the generator and water pump turned with ease.  The engine showed no sign of leakage.  Even the spark plug wires, air filter, cooling system hoses and radiator adorned the engine in relatively good condition considering age.  The radiator surprisingly showed no sign of leakage.



The front of the truck still has the original chrome grille and bumper.  Sure they are rusted.  The grille is not dented and there are minor dings in the bumper but this is nothing compared to the damage found in the Midwest.

A close look at the right side found similar conditions to the left.  The paint is faded away, surface rust, no dents, door glass in the frame, running board straight as an arrow, spare tire with wide white sidewall affixed to the right quarter.  What a find!

Despite the fear of heat exhaustion, scorpions, tarantulas and rattle snakes I crawled under the truck to examine the undercarriage and clearly found the frame in great condition. Of course fuel lines, brake lines and hoses need replacement, but the driveline looked original and in good condition. 

A look along the rear of the cab found no dents or damage.  The rear glass was missing but a second look in the cargo bed found the glass in good condition with the weather strip around the entire glass.  Also, found in the bed is a chrome bumper for a 1938 Desoto and some exhaust parts for another vehicle.




A look at the rear of the truck found the tailgate in great shape with the Ford V8 logo proudly displaying the heritage and power of the truck.  This vehicle is equipped with either a 136 cubic inch displacement 60 horsepower engine or 221 cubic inch 85 horsepower engine. Another plus!

I had to learn more about this vehicle.  I found Gregg Ovist, Restoration Shop Manager.  He explained that the truck has a clean title.  He stated that it was purchased as part of an estate sale and was found in a barn.  He said that his company purchased 150 vehicles from the estate.  He said they did not have another vehicle like this in their inventory, but any missing parts could be found because in the old days many parts were interchangeable especially among commercial vehicles.

 

The only parts I could see missing are interior window cranks, weather strips, fuel filler neck hose, gas cap and the windshield, but otherwise the truck had virtually every necessary part.  Gregg stated that in September when the weather cools a little his guys are cranking up the engine to give it some exercise.  He also stated that 50 people are bidding on the vehicle and one person made a commitment to purchase it, but backed out at the last minute.

If you are in the market to purchase a restoration project, consider searching the southwest for diamonds in the rough such as this 1940 Ford.  Restoring a vehicle in such good condition definitely gives you a cost advantage over most rusted-out finds in the Midwest.

Parts Replacement Not The Cure
Question 1
My 2006 Volkswagen GTI lacks power and the check engine light is on.  The car has a 2.0-liter engine.  I had the same problem a few years back when the car was covered by the factory warranty.  The warranty has since expired. 

I took the car to an auto supply store to have the engine tested.  The man at the store found three codes all related to the fuel pressure regulator and some codes for misfiring spark plugs.  He did not want to sell me a bunch of parts because he did not know what caused all of the codes.  He suggested that I take the car to a repair shop.

The car acts the same way it did when it was repaired a few years ago.  I found the receipt from the previous repair so I can purchase the same part.  The codes the man at the auto parts store found are, P2294, P2293, P0087, PO300, PO303 and PO304.

Answer 1
Take the advice of the auto supply store employee.  Some of the codes are related to fuel system issues.  Other codes are for engine misfire issues that could be caused by a troubled fuel system.  The fuel system is highly pressurized.  If you do not follow suggested safety procedures you could be injured, cause a fire or worse.

Now that I have warned you, the trouble might be due to a failed fuel pump.  There are two pumps in your vehicle.  One is a delivery pump which is in the fuel tank and the other is a high pressure pump on the engine.  Additionally, there is a fuel pressure regulator and sensor.  Faults in any one of these parts could cause the trouble you are encountering.
You could purchase the part listed on your receipt and install it, but this may not cure the trouble.  Since it is highly probable your purchase is an electrical part you will not be able to return it for a refund or exchange as the general policy at auto supply stores or dealership parts departments is no refund or exchange of electrical parts.
Consider leaving this task to a pro.


Dealership Not An Option 
Question 2
My 2002 Honda Civic failed to start.  When I turned the key the engine cranked but would not start.  The car was towed to a repair shop where a mechanic determined that the green light for the security system is not illuminating.  He asked me to bring all the keys to his shop.  I brought all of them, but none started the car.

Next he contacted a locksmith.  The locksmith checked over the car, but could not determine the trouble. 

Next, the mechanic replaced the powertrain module but that didn’t fix the trouble.  Then he replaced a module for the security system.  Now the green light works but the car still does not start.  My mechanic reinstalled the old powertrain module and still the engine does not start. 

Now my mechanic wants to tow the car to a dealer to have them check over the car.  I don’t want my car taken to a dealer.  They charge too much.  Do you have any suggestions?  D.T., email

Answer 2
It appears that your technician has pinpointed the trouble.  The module for the Immobilizer theft deterrent system failed.  Additionally, it appears that the powertrain control module needs reprogramming.  It appears that your technician does not have the tool to reprogram it.  Since this might be the case, he wants to have a local dealership do the reprogramming work. 

Certainly you can tell him not to take the car to a dealership for this procedure.  Ask him if he has a relationship with another independent repair shop that has the equipment to do the work.  If so, the other shop can reprogram the module.  If not perhaps, you can find a shop to do the work or have the car taken to a dealership.

A/C Quits When Going Up Hills
Question 3
On a recent trip in my 2003 Ford Focus the air conditioner would cut out when going up a hill.  Once I returned home I discovered that occasionally the a/c cuts out during normal driving.  It might shut off for ten minutes and then start up again.  When the a/c quits, the fan works fine and the vents respond to my preferences on the controls but cold air doesn’t blow from the vents.  I checked the electrical connection on the compressor and cleaned it but this has not made any difference.

I took the car to a repair shop but tests found everything was working normally at the shop.  The shop manager says I should wait until the trouble becomes worse or bring it in when it’s not working.

Answer 3
Some system designs allow for the air conditioner compressor to shut off when the engine is under heavy loads such as driving up a hill.  This may be normal but since it quits during normal driving there likely is a problem.

There is a lot more to the air conditioning system than meets the eye.  There are relays, a high pressure switch, a low pressure switch, an engine control module, controls in the dash, the throttle position switch, temperature sensors and more.  Since the system worked normally during tests it is next to impossible for a technician to determine the cause of the trouble.  Be this as it may the trouble might be due to a poor electrical connection.

Suspicion points to a poor connection at the high pressure switch.  For some reason when designing the car the switch was placed in front of the right front tire where it can be exposed to water and dirt.  If you are so inclined check the plug and terminals.  If you are not an avid do-it-yourselfer, ask a technician to do the work.  Cleaning the connections and protecting them with dielectric grease may cure this condition at least until the next time they become dirty.
Transmission Has Seen Better Days
Question 4
I have a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban with a 5.7-liter engine and 139,000 miles.  I decided to have the transmission fluid changed.  A shop drained the fluid, replaced the filter and cleaned the pan.  The mechanic said he found a lot of black material in the pan.  Since the service, the transmission shifts fine when I first start out in the morning but after driving a few miles when the transmission shifts from second to third gear it does not shift smoothly into third gear.  There is a pause before it fully grabs and engages. 

I spoke with the manager at the shop that serviced the transmission.  His shop does not repair transmissions but after a short test drive he thinks the transmission needs an overhaul or replacement.  He suggested that I take the vehicle to another shop for repair.

Answer 4
There are vehicles that travel well over 200,000 miles without transmission trouble and then there are some that need a transmission two or three times during their service life. 

Tests should discover the cause of the trouble.  Since a technician found excessive debris in the pan it is more likely than not the transmission has come to the end of its service life.  An overhaul or replacement is the next step.

Weigh your options carefully when selecting a course of repair.  An overhaul may only be covered by a one year warranty.  A replacement transmission warranty may be much longer.  Also, consider price and what your future plans are for the vehicle.

Time To Visit Another Shop

I drove home from work and parked my 2006 Volkswagen Jetta with a diesel engine.  The next morning I started the engine, backed down my driveway and the engine stalled.  I attempted to start it but it just cranked but would not start. 

I had the car towed to a shop that has been servicing it for the last few years.  Once it arrived at the shop a technician jumped it and started the car.  He was able to drive it into the shop but it stalled as he was pulling into his work area.  He did some tests but his equipment will not communicate with the engine computer.  The shop manager says it is likely the engine computer has failed but he does not want to install one because he is not sure this is the trouble.  He suggested that I have the car towed to a dealership.  He says that the equipment at his shop can’t program a new module.

Without a doubt I have run into troubles such as yours.

It’s not common for an engine control module to need replacement but it does happen.  Additionally, not all repair shops have the specialized equipment to program this module.  Most independent shops use generic equipment that can do a great deal of testing on many different year, make, and model vehicles but there are limitations with generic equipment.  When it comes to programming engine computers many times manufacturer specific equipment is needed.  Most independent shops purchase equipment for specific brands that commonly visit their shop due to technician expertise and specialization in a certain brand of vehicles.  Some shops may specialize in Dodge repairs and the one next door may specialize in Toyotas. 

Since your present shop suggests towing the vehicle to a dealership there is no doubt a dealer shop will have the tools to cure the trouble but there may be a nearby independent shop that specializes in VW repair.  If so, you might consider towing the vehicle there for it is likely that shop invested in the tools to communicate and program the engine control module.

My 1998 Mazda 626 runs fine when driving but when I stop for a light or in traffic the 2.0-liter engine runs rough and stalls.  I have owned this car since it was new.  It’s in great condition.  I have followed the suggested service schedule in the owner’s manual.  It has 103,000 miles.

I took it to a local repair shop that has been servicing the car for many years.  The mechanic did not find any trouble codes in the computer, but during a test drive the engine stalled.  They tuned the engine and replaced an airflow sensor.  When this did not cure the trouble they used smoke to look for leaks and did some tests on the EGR and throttle sensor but could not find the cause of the trouble.  He checked the engine module and wiring but says everything tests fine.

Now the mechanic is at a loss.  The shop owner wants to take the car to a dealer for tests.  I trust their judgment, but I would rather not have them take the car to a dealer.  What do you think is wrong?  L.S., email

It’s not time for the technician to give up.  Perhaps the shop owner has another technician who can brainstorm with the assigned servicing technician.  Usually technicians working together can determine faults. 

Since there are no trouble codes in the engine computer it is time to go over all test results and perhaps redo some tests.

Since stalling can be caused by faults in the exhaust gas recirculation valve or leaks at the intake manifold the technicians might consider retesting these parts.  Since smoke tests were performed for leaks at the intake manifold they may consider smoke again or other methods to retest for manifold leaks. 

If the shop owner is adamant about taking the car to a dealership shop he must have a good reason for this decision.  Consider trusting his judgment for he knows the limitations of his equipment and level of technician expertise.  If he believes repairs exceed limitations and has a good relationship with a dealership this option is another path to a quick and lasting repair.
