Mini Car Myths Debunked

2013 Chevrolet Spark challenges common myths

DETROIT – Mini cars have been populating international streets for decades, and are now building a solid presence in the United States. The segment is characterized by some misconceptions that the newest entries, like Chevrolet’s all-new Spark, can confidently refute.

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark, a four-passenger, five-door hatchback, was designed to challenge what’s possible in the mini-car segment. Here’s a look at how Chevy’s newest addition to its small car line-up is tackling some of the common misconceptions surrounding today’s mini-cars.

Myth: Mini cars aren’t Safe
Reality: Spark features the same advanced safety technologies available on the rest of the Chevrolet passenger car lineup

The Spark protects both driver and passengers with 10 standard air bags, including dual-stage frontal air bags, seat-mounted side air bags and side curtain air bags that extend over the front and rear seating rows. A strong body frame made of high strength steel makes up more than 62 percent of the Spark’s underbody and 42 percent of its upper body.
Myth: Mini cars are cramped and uncomfortable
Reality: Spark’s interior is spacious with room to fit four adults comfortably

The Spark offers more space for people and stuff than its competitors in the mini car segment. Its cargo area of 11.4 cubic feet behind the rear seat is 20 percent more spacious than the Fiat 500 and 225 percent more than the Scion IQ. With the rear seats folded down, drivers have 31.2 cubic feet of space. That is enough space to hold a Samsonite laptop backpack, DKX 25” rolling luggage bag, 30” Hardside Upright suitcase and Calloway golf bag.

Myth: The smaller the vehicle the better the aerodynamics
Reality: Mini-cars are not as aerodynamic as they appear

You can change a lot, but you can't change physics and despite popular belief, mini cars aren’t as aerodynamic as you may think. Mini cars short and tall design creates higher aerodynamic drag. However, engineers designed the Spark to maximize a driver’s urban lifestyle, making it maneuverable, easy to park and achieving the lowest estimated fuel cost of any Chevy small car, except for the Volt electric car with extended range capability.

Myth: Mini cars handling and vehicle performance leaves something to be desired
Reality: Spark doesn’t just look fun to drive, it actually is

Electric power steering and MacPherson strut front suspension are designed to deliver taut, tight handling characteristics that better connect the driver with the road and provide outstanding overall stability. Spark also has a tight turning circle of only 32.5 feet (9.9 meters), which enhances its maneuverability in urban areas.

The Spark is the only mini car covered by a five-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, which includes roadside assistance and courtesy transportation. In addition to powertrain coverage, Spark is backed by a three-year/36,000-mile comprehensive warranty and a six-year/100,000-mile rust-through warranty.

Myth: The design and features of mini cars are boring
Reality: Spark dares to stand out in a crowd with the newest color trends and latest technology

With a color pallet that includes Salsa Red, Jalapeno, Denim, Lemonade and Techno Pink, the Spark seeks to attract attention.

The Spark is the first Chevy without a factory-installed CD player, which was ditched in favor of the Chevrolet MyLink system – standard on 1LT and 2LT models. The MyLink system is designed to integrate with the driver’s Smartphone via Bluetooth or USB. Once connected, the system becomes an extension of the user’s device, giving them access to stored music and applications such as Pandora internet radio, Tune-In and Stitcher. MyLink also includes the recently introduced BringGo application – an embedded smartphone app that delivers full-function navigation.

Launched in Korea in 2009 and now available in almost every country in the world, the Spark’s journey to the U.S. market is in response to the recent popularity of mini cars among U.S. consumers. The Spark has sold more than 600,000 vehicles globally, and is gaining momentum with American drivers. It was the fastest-selling vehicle in July 2012 with an average four days-to-turn – the time from its arrival on a dealer lot to sale to a customer.

Gas Gauge Indicates Fuel But Engine Starves For Gas
Question 1
Recently, I ran out of gas in my 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan with 130,000 miles.  The low fuel symbol on the dash had just come on, the needle showed about one eight full and the overhead display showed 40 miles to empty.

Recently, the level sensor and pump in the tank were replaced due to a similar problem.  I have asked the technician that did the replacement to see if it can be re-calibrated.  Previous to the original equipment sensor's failure, it was dead-on accurate.
Aside from bending the float rod, do you know if my level sensor or gauge instruments can be accurately calibrated so I don't run out of gas again?          D.P., email

Answer 1
Beside circuit tests of the wiring, the system has three parts that need testing.  The signals from the fuel module in the fuel tank and the body control module communicate with each other.  The results of communication register on the dash fuel level indicator.  Tests of all three should determine if they are accurate within specifications.  Also, it is necessary to make sure the body control module program is up-to-date.

Bending the float rod on the tank module is not an option as this is guess-work.  It’s possible the body control module needs an update calibration, the dash indicator has a fault or perhaps the newly installed part is an aftermarket unit that does not meet all original equipment standards.  If the fuel module is an aftermarket unit it may need replacement with an original equipment part from a dealership.

Noise Appears After A/C Repair
Question 2
The air conditioner compressor went out in my 2002 Ford Econoline work truck.  My van has a 4.2-liter engine and 92,000 miles.  I had my local shop repair it.  They installed a new compressor, condenser, orifice tube, belt, belt tensioner and idler pulley.

After the repair the air conditioner makes a rattling noise.  My shop has tried to determine what is causing the problem.  They installed another compressor but this did not cure the trouble.

The rattling is driving me nuts.  This repair is costing a small fortune.  Other than the rattling the a/c cools fine.  Do you have any suggestions?  S.L., email

Answer 2
Dynamite should cure the trouble.  All kidding aside, the technician has replaced almost all the major components in the system.  At this juncture, ask the shop to flush the entire system especially the evaporator core.  This procedure may cure the condition once and for all.

Don’t Attempt A/C Repair
Question 3
The air conditioner in my 2006 Toyota Tacoma quit working.  I found that the compressor was not turning on.  When I installed a jumper wire on the compressor plug it turned on but it made an awful sound.

If I install a new compressor and fill the system with Freon from an auto supply store will this fix the trouble?  G.L., email

Answer 3
First of all it is likely you don’t have the tools and expertise to do the repair.  You could be injured.  The system is pressurized.  A shot of pressurized refrigerant in your eyes or on skin could cause serious injury.  We do not want harm to befall you.

There appears to be an internal failure in the compressor.  When this occurs, metal fragments contaminate the entire system.  To fix it requires replacement of critical parts such as the compressor.  It also requires specialized equipment to flush contamination from all of the lines hoses and components.  When the system is sparkling clean and free of debris, specialized equipment must be utilized to test for leaks prior to charging the system with refrigerant and oil.

Faulty Circuit Causes Misfire
Question 4
The check engine light turned on in my 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette with a 3.4-liter engine and 199,000 miles.  I went to an auto supply store to have computer codes checked.  The parts person found a misfire code for cylinder six and another code for voltage issues for the fuel injector on cylinder six.

I replaced the spark plug and wire on six.  I also added fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank.  The check engine light turned back on after the work.  The code indicates voltage problems for the injector.  Do you think I should replace the fuel injector?  B.M., email
Answer 4
Voltage problems could be the result of an internal problem in the fuel injector but sometimes the trouble is caused by an external problem.  Check the plug connection on the fuel injector.  It may be contaminated with oil, dirt or corrosion.  It’s also possible a ground connection in the circuit is loose or corroded.  Correct these conditions as needed.  If the injector returns to normal operation after addressing wiring issues, obviously it does not need replacement.

Makes Sense To Dr. Gizmo
Question 5
My 2001 Cadillac DeVille overheated.  The car was towed to my local shop that has been servicing it for many years.  The manager says that depending upon the length of time the engine ran while overheated that it might be ruined.

When I realized the car was overheating I pulled over and shut off the engine.  Once the car arrived at the repair shop it started and ran fine.  My shop manager said that his technician needs to do some tests but at the very least it is likely the cylinder gaskets need replacing.  He won’t know the extent of damage until the engine is apart.  He has to remove the engine to do the work.  Does this make sense to you?  M.W., email

Answer 5
Yes.  Overheating conditions can ruin an engine in a matter of minutes.  Recently, I examined an engine that overheated.  The vehicle owner said she drove with the hot light on for about one mile.  Two pistons melted from the heat.  The engine needed replacement.

Fortunately, it appears your engine was running normally when it arrived at the repair shop.  More than likely personnel at your shop will find that it does not need replacement.  It’s more likely than not the head gaskets need replacement as this is a common failure.  If so, once the new gaskets are in place the engine will run great for years to come.
Oil Pump Failure Is Coincidence
Question 6
I have a 2006 Honda Civic that I took to a repair shop because the air conditioner quit working.  The shop replaced the compressor.  I picked up the car and the air conditioner was working great.  I drove home without any problems.  The next morning, I started the engine and the oil light turned on.  Immediately, I shut it off.  I called the repair shop and they sent a tow truck.

That afternoon, the shop manager called to inform me that the oil level was proper but the oil pump had failed and needed replacement.

My car is in great condition.  It has 106,000 miles on it.  I change the oil every 2,500 to 3,500 miles along with a new filter.  Did the shop damage the oil pump when they fixed the air conditioner?  R.T., email

Answer 6
No.  The air conditioner compressor is secured to the outside of the engine.  It is not necessary for a technician to remove anything to do with the oil pump to gain access it.  The oil pump is within the engine.

Fortunately for you the oil pump failed when you were not driving.  If you did not shut off the engine as quickly as you did, engine bearings may have been damaged.  Often when a pump fails, a motorist does not have a safe opportunity to pull to the side of the road to shut off the engine.  They may drive a mile or more to a safe place.  This results in a failed engine due insufficient lubrication of bearings.  You were very lucky.

Now that the oil pump is replaced, your car’s engine may run another 100 or 200,000 miles with the oil change regime and care you provide.  Keep up the good work!

Thanks for all of your great questions.  Dr. Gizmo can’t wait to answer more.

More green, less mean: Ford delivers tools for proper charging station etiquette

Chances are pretty good that charging stations soon are going to be part of your life in one way, shape or form (if they aren’t already). Whether you depend on them for fuel to get from point A to point B or you’re simply curious about those odd-looking devices near the best parking spots in the lot, you’re going to see even more charging stations as companies such as Ford continue to increase their electrified offerings. Ford is launching five new electrified vehicles in 2012, including the all-new Fusion Hybrid. In late July, there were about 9,400 public charging stations in the U.S., located at fast food restaurants and coffee shops to the most cutting-edge businesses and universities.

But the one thing missing has been a proper guide to vehicle charging station etiquette – until now. Ford has prepared a short video on the basics of charging station etiquette, a reference guide to keep handy for dealing with plugged-in vehicles and a placard you can put to use right away as you charge ahead in your efforts to make the world a greener, less-meaner place.

  •

The Fusion equipped with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine is available with Ford’s patented, fuel-saving Auto Start-Stop system, which smoothly shuts off engine power when the car is stopped and seamlessly restarts as the driver releases the brake pedal. This feature, available for just $295, improves fuel efficiency by 3.5 percent and reduces emissions.

Fusion Hybrid features two additional innovations to help deliver industry-best fuel efficiency: Ford’s patented SmartGauge® with EcoGuide that coaches drivers for top fuel efficiency; and ECO Cruise, a greener cruise control functionality that helps optimize powertrain elements for convenient yet economical highway travel.

Fusion Hybrid achieves a top speed of 62 mph in electric or EV mode and also has Active Grille Shutters, which make the car more aerodynamic at highway speeds to improve fuel efficiency. An underbody with aerodynamically designed panels provides even better fuel efficiency.

World-class craftsmanship, driving dynamics

The full Fusion range delivers visual quality through improved materials, elevated levels of craftsmanship and attention to detail. To deliver its world-class driving dynamics, Ford engineers equipped Fusion with a specially tuned electric power-assisted steering system, MacPherson strut front suspension and all-new multilink rear suspension that is comparable to the setups found in more expensive Audis and BMWs.

Fusion is a driver’s car,” said Raj Nair, group vice president of Product Development. “We have carefully tuned this car to reward the driving expert and flatter the novice.”

Ford’s quietest midsize sedan ever, Fusion Hybrid models are equipped with Active Noise Cancellation, which uses the audio system to mitigate powertrain noise.

Technology you can use

The all-new Fusion offers an unprecedented portfolio of driver assistance and convenience technologies using sensors, cameras and radar to enable the car to “see” and respond.

Fusion can help drivers maintain proper lane position, adjust vehicle speed to changing traffic conditions, identify suitable parking spaces and practically park itself – it can even aid drivers backing out of a parking space in which visibility is obstructed. Specific technologies include:

  • Lane-Keeping System: Using a small, forward-facing camera behind the inside rearview mirror, this system “looks” down the road, monitoring lane lines to determine that the car is on course. The system will alert a driver if drowsiness or erratic lane-keeping is detected. The second element warns a driver with a steering wheel vibration if the Fusion drifts too close to lane markings. Finally, Lane-Keeping Aid will actually apply pressure on the steering to help bring the car back into proper lane position
  • Adaptive cruise control: Using forward-looking radar, this system “looks” down the road when activated, slowing the Fusion when slower traffic is detected ahead. The system can help slow the car if the potential of a crash is detected
  • Active park assist: Employing sensors, this technology identifies a suitable parallel parking space, calculates the trajectory, and steers the car to properly position it within the spot. Drivers operate accelerator and brake pedals
  • BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert: Sensors in both Fusion rear quarter-panels are able to detect traffic in a driver’s blind spot, providing both audible and visual warnings if traffic is detected. BLIS technology enables cross-traffic alert, warning the driver of oncoming traffic when backing out of a parking space with obstructed views, such as between two large vehicles
  •
The all-new Fusion also offers the newest version of Ford’s award-winning SYNC® communications and entertainment system, which enables voice-activated communication through a driver’s mobile phone and interaction with the car’s audio system.

Fusion is available with the latest version of MyFord Touch®, allowing a driver to interact with vehicle systems through voice control, a touch screen tap or a conventional button.

Both SYNC and MyFord Touch – powered by SYNC – help reduce the potential for driver distraction through voice-controlled functionality, allowing drivers to keep hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Fusion equals growth

The midsize car segment is the fastest-growing segment in America this year. Overall U.S. industry sales are up 15 percent in 2012, while midsize car sales have grown 26 percent.

To meet expected demand for the new Fusion, Ford is adding 1,200 hourly jobs and investing $555 million at its Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Flat Rock, Mich.

New Fusion models begin arriving at dealers nationwide this fall.

Acadia Denali’s standard equipment includes a power tilt and telescoping steering column, Head-Up Display, Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

“The 2013 Acadia arrives with great momentum,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of GMC Marketing. “Our design and engineering updates add even more value to an award-winning vehicle that just saw its best August ever, with retail sales up 35 percent.”

Acadia is a segment leader in retained value, defined as the projected residual value of a vehicle after five years of ownership. Both Edmunds.com and ALG have named the 2012 Acadia to their respective lists of the industry’s residual value leaders.

GMC has manufactured trucks since 1902, and is one of the industry's healthiest brands. Innovation and engineering excellence is built into all GMC vehicles and the brand is evolving to offer more fuel-efficient trucks and crossovers, including the Terrain small SUV and Acadia crossover. GMC is the only manufacturer to offer three full-size hybrid trucks with the Yukon, Yukon Denali SUVs and the Sierra pickup. The Sierra Heavy Duty pickups are the most capable and powerful trucks in the market. Toyota Provides Annual National Dealer Meeting Highlights

LAS VEGAS, NV -- Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. held its annual Toyota division national dealer meeting here yesterday attended by representatives from over 1,400 of Toyota’s U.S. dealers. Speakers included Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) President Akio Toyoda, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. (TMS) Chairman and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) Executive Advisor Yoshi Inaba, TMS President and CEO Jim Lentz, Toyota Division Senior Vice President Automotive Operations, Bob Carter, Toyota Division Group Vice President and General Manager Bill Fay and Vice President-Scion Doug Murtha.

Mr. Toyoda shared his vision for the company and his focus on collaboration as a key contributor to the company’s success moving forward, when speaking about the new tag line, “Let’s Go Places.” Some key points from his speech included:

  • “Let’s Go Places,” Toyota’s engaging new tagline, reflects the company’s commitment to more exciting products and the promise that customers are invited to take part in shaping Toyota’s future. The new tagline will be integrated into all of Toyota’s national and regional advertising in 2013.
  • Collaboration not only within Toyota, but across the industry and with key businesses in other industries. Mr. Toyoda pointed out recently formed alliances with Tesla, Microsoft, Salesforce.com as well as BMW and a partnership with Ford on the development of an advanced new hybrid system for light trucks and SUVs. These collaborations help the company stretch beyond its own boundaries and create cars that will improve the lives of customers.
While acknowledging that his vision of collaborating with competitors may seem unorthodox, Mr. Toyoda explained, “Let all of us in this industry strive to make the best cars we can and work together for the greater good of all our customers.”

Highlights from other executive speeches included:
  • Seven new or updated Toyota and Scion vehicles launched in 2013. The company continues its commitment to building in the U.S. with strong product cadence including the new Avalon and others.
  • Toyota’s Sales Recovery. Customer loyalty was key to realizing the strong and successful recovery. Toyota’s U.S. sales are up 31 percent from last year, while the industry is up only 14 percent. The company expects to sell over 2 million vehicles in 2012 – the first time since 2008.
  • Prius family launch. The brand continues its success and domination of the hybrid market with more than 50 percent market share.
  • The launch of the new generation Camry. The passenger car sales leader launched successfully, resulting in large gains appealing to younger drivers and families. The average Camry buyer is now just 52 years old, down from 60 years old previously and below the segment average of 58. There are 7.5 million Camrys on the road today, and Camry continues to have the highest owner retention in the segment.
  • Toyota’s commitment to putting a fuel cell vehicle on the road by 2015. Toyota is researching bio-fuels and next-generation materials to help make vehicles that will be lighter, safe and more fuel-efficient. Telematics, another area of investment for the company, will contain research into car-connectivity technology such as gesture recognition and an autonomous car project that would help eliminate driver distraction and improve safety innovations.
  • Toyota is committed to the communities in which it does business. Since 1991 the company has given nearly $600 million to charities in the U.S. and with the 100 Cars for Good program in its second year, more than 200 local organizations will benefit from the use of a new vehicle to do good.
  • The new Customer First program. Executives lauded this new program’s launch designed to help connect customers throughout the ownership cycle, from shopping and sales to parts and service.
