GMC Pickups 101: Alphabet Soup of Acronyms

Explaining the GVWRs, the SRWs and the DRWs

DETROIT – Nearly every full-size pickup owner has a unique use for his or her truck. And considering the GMC Sierra’s 19 different cab and box combinations, the veritable alphabet soup of models practically has its own language of acronyms.

Some of the most important truck acronyms for owners to know are gross weight ratings. Exceeding any of a truck’s weight ratings is unsafe, and it’s a driver’s responsibility to know and avoid exceeding them.

“Nearly every vehicle performance attribute is designed and tested to one or more gross weight rating,” said Robert Krouse, General Motors trailering engineer. ”Body and chassis structural durability, powertrain and driveline durability, handling, braking, thermal and propulsion performance are all validated to specific ratings. That’s why it’s so important for owners to understand those limits.”
  • GAWR, or Gross Axle Weight Rating, is the maximum amount of weight that can be placed on either a truck’s front or rear axle, including the weight of the truck, driver, passengers, equipment and cargo. A higher front GAWR generally means more capacity for accessories like plows, while a high rear GAWR relates to a higher payload.
  • GVWR, or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, is the maximum amount of weight for the entire truck and everything in it. This number isn’t simply each axle rating added together; for that to work, the owner would have to precisely load so that each axle weight rating is met just as the overall vehicle rating is met, which isn’t possible in real world conditions. As a result, GVWR is always lower than the sum of each axle to account for changes in weight distribution.
  • GCWR, or Gross Combined Weight Rating, is the maximum weight of a truck and an attached trailer, plus everything in each of them. Some of a trailer’s weight is supported by the truck – this is known as tongue weight – a GCWR isn’t simply the GVWR plus the trailer’s weight. When attaching a trailer, an owner should factor tongue weight into a truck’s payload capacity.

Copyright General Motors

“It’s very important that drivers observe these limits to maintain safe stopping distances,” said Krouse. “Not only that, overloading a truck causes excessive wear on suspension and brakes and could lead to engine or transmission failure.”

The 2013 Sierra’s highest GCWR is 30,500 pounds for a 3500HD Duramax DRW model. DRW, another truck acronym, applies only to 3500HD one-ton pickups. It implies a “dual rear wheel” option, as opposed to a “single rear wheel,” or SRW.

The option adds not only higher payload and weight limits, but also better stability with a large trailer attached. For a 2013 Sierra 3500HD 4x4 Crew Cab, a DRW option adds 5,700 pounds of available trailer weight rating and 1,011 pounds of payload capacity.

GMC has manufactured trucks since 1902, and is one of the industry's healthiest brands. Innovation and engineering excellence is built into all GMC vehicles and the brand is evolving to offer more fuel-efficient trucks and crossovers, including the Terrain small SUV and Acadia crossover. GMC is the only manufacturer to offer three full-size hybrid trucks with the Yukon, Yukon Denali SUVs and the Sierra pickup. The Sierra Heavy Duty pickups are the most capable and powerful trucks in the market. Details on all GMC models are available at http://www.gmc.com/, on Twitter at @thisisgmc or at http://www.facebook.com/gmc.

  • Industry continues to track at lowest levels since 1994

  • Ford sales in the UK increased by 11 per cent in October, driving Ford’s market share up 0.3 percentage points to 15.1 per cent and extending Ford’s market leadership
  • In Russia, October year-to-date sales were up 13 per cent, making it the third largest sales market for Ford behind the UK and Germany
  • In Germany, Ford achieved its best market share this year, with 7.6 per cent in October

“We were able to deliver a solid month in sales and share while successfully maintaining margins in a very competitive market place,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe. “While the market remains very weak, we can now really gain some momentum with the strong start for the new B-MAX and Transit Custom and the impending launch of the new Fiesta and new Kuga.”

“Transit Connect Wagon gives young families and people on the go the fun-to-drive and efficient vehicle they’ve been looking for,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s President of The Americas. “It’s an all-new, smaller seven-seater that has better mileage than larger vans and creates a segment of its own. Customers also will love the unique combination of style, adaptability and affordability this wagon brings.”

No other wagon in the market today offers the convenience of fold-flat seating, at least a 1,200-pound payload and more than 100 cubic feet of cargo space.

When properly equipped, this versatile wagon is approved to tow up to 2,000 pounds, 500 pounds more than a four-cylinder Toyota Highlander SUV
.
Have it your way
Transit Connect Wagon offers customers a choice between two fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines – a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an optional 1.6-liter EcoBoost® that is estimated to deliver 30 mpg-plus on the highway. This powertrain makes Transit Connect Wagon the gas mileage leader among seven-passenger vehicles.

Both engines come mated to a convenient six-speed automatic transmission, geared for around-town responsiveness and low-rpm highway cruising.

A range of seating surfaces, from luxurious leather, comfortable cloth and heavy-duty vinyl, is available to suit the specific needs of a wide variety of potential customers.

Commercial-strength DNA in a family versatility vehicle
Transit Connect Wagon’s work-hard/play-hard nature is reflected in cargo-carrying capacity and room for up to seven comfortably seated passengers, wrapped in a high-strength body engineered to rigorous global commercial vehicle durability standards.

The all-new Transit Connect Wagon builds on the foundation of reliability and durability established by the current Transit Connect compact van. Introduced in North America in 2009, Transit Connect has become the must-have vehicle for small business proprietors, thanks to its unmatched combination of payload and cargo capacities, adaptability, fuel efficiency, maneuverability and overall ease of driving.

Transit Connect was recognized as an innovative “white space” vehicle – literally carving out a new category in the market – by the automotive industry press corps when it was named North American Truck of the Year in January 2010 at the North American International Auto Show.

Now selling at a pace of 35,000 units per year, Transit Connect has become a favorite of small businesses, corporate fleets, taxi operators and a few individualistic owners who find its combination of a car-like ride and the cargo capacity of a van just right for their personal use.

“The all-new Transit Connect Wagon will expand the personal-use audience for this versatile nameplate by offering up to seven-passenger capacity across three rows of seating in a fully trimmed interior,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford vice president of Global Engineering, Global Product Development. “It has an extensive selection of comfort, convenience and connectivity options, and a full complement of safety features – making it a modern, family-friendly alternative to oversized minivans.”

All Transit Connect Wagon models feature first-row frontal, pelvis and side airbags, with first-, second- and third-row side curtain airbags in long-wheelbase models. Short-wheelbase versions get first- and second-row side curtain airbags.

Ford’s award-winning MyKey® programmable ignition key enables restricting maximum vehicle speed and audio system volume, bringing additional peace of mind to both parents and fleet administrators alike.

Transit Connect Wagon even offers a child observation mirror so parents can keep track of children safely belted in second- and third-row seats.

Infinite adaptability
Inside, the Transit Connect Wagon package is a rolling showcase for adaptability in hauling both people and cargo.

From its 60/40 three-passenger second-row bench seat through fold-flat second- and third-row seating with third-row independent fore-and-aft sliding capability, Transit Connect Wagon quickly adapts to accommodate multiple combinations of people and cargo.

Also available is an electric windshield defroster, making short work of icy windshields in wintry conditions and when parking Transit Connect Wagon on the street.

The versatile Transit Connect Wagon offers far better fuel efficiency than traditional minivans, compact-car-like maneuverability and handling, combined with unprecedented payload and cargo capabilities.

Look for Transit Connect Wagon to appear in North American Ford dealerships in the fourth quarter of 2013. Consumers can get more information and learn more about the Transit Connect Wagon at http://ford.com/transitconnectwagon.

Recalls Of The Day, November 27, 2012

Recalls sometimes make a person wonder how a company that has been making vehicles since before there were seat belts or exhaust emission standards could produce a pickup truck that has a spare tire that might fall from its mount and fall on a roadway.  This has potential to cause a serious situation for other motorists.

The National Highway Traffic Administration announced this issue yesterday.  If your vehicle is affected please have the trouble corrected before the spare tire bounces along a road causing a serious hazard.

Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s):
TOYOTA / TACOMA 2001-2004
Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & ManufacturingReport Receipt Date: NOV 23, 2012
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 12V542000 NHTSA Action Number: N/A
Component: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE
Potential Number of Units Affected: 150,000
Summary:
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Tacoma light trucks manufactured from August 28, 2000, through August 27, 2004, and originally sold, or currently registered, in the following cold climate states with high road salt usage: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The spare tire in the subject vehicles is located underneath the rear of the vehicle and held by a spare tire carrier. A lift plate on the carrier is used to help raise, lower and retain the tire. During its manufacture, the lift plate may not have been sufficiently coated with anti-corrosion materials. If the plate is insufficiently coated and the vehicle is operated in cold climate regions where road salts are frequently used, road spray can reach the carrier assembly and corrode the lift plate.
Consequence:
Corrosion of the plate could cause it to break, which could result in detachment of the spare tire from the vehicle. Detachment of the spare tire could result in a road hazard which may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
Remedy:

Ford Fusion Interior Takes Cues from Sculpted, Three-Dimensional Fashion Trends on This Season’s Runways

  • This season’s fashion focuses on textures and sculpted looks, with a wide variety of color; the trend is similar to the interior of the all-new Ford Fusion
  • Ford Fusion offers a sculpted interior with sleek, symmetrical lines and both high and subtle contrasts in color
  • In both fashion and vehicle interiors, details are extremely important, from lace on a collar to the grain in a wood finish

LOS ANGELES  – Today’s fashion is expressive, sculpted, three-dimensional – rife with patterns and textures that create depth and visual interest. These runway trends are very similar to the creative new interiors appearing in vehicles like the all-new Ford Fusion.

“We’re getting more expressive with the diversity of color – just like you see in fashion,” says Susan Swek, group chief designer, Color & Material Design. “Our range is expanding in all sorts of color spaces; we’re going from lights to darks, both high and subtle contrasts, thoughtfully designed, harmonious colors.”

The similarities between aesthetic worlds isn’t terribly surprising, Swek explains. “Colors and materials – in any industry – are really about stimulating the senses,” she says. “They’re about sensory design along with complementing other design elements. They’re about detail and interest and texture, and about the way things come together.”

In fashion, that might mean a lace dress with a stiff stand-up collar and a solid leather belt, all drawn together in a rich pattern. In a vehicle, it could be a soft fabric trim or a rich wood finish in an unusual grain – it could even be the surprise of an espresso seat with a white interior.

“We’re seeing more dimension, more fresh new approaches,” Swek adds.

That trend continues even in the interior sculpting of the vehicle itself, according to senior designer Sewon Chun, a member of the Fusion interior design team.

“Humans are three-dimensional people,” he says. “It’s the nature of humans to want to see three-dimensionally – to want that highlight, that shadow.”

The center stack of the Fusion, for example, is not a flat surface like customers might see in other cars.

“Our goal was to make the car more structural,” Chun says. “So you don’t have a boring square. We use different materials so certain parts will jump out, and other areas will be the second or third thing the passenger sees. With layered dimensions we add space, interest and airiness to the interior.”

The entirety of the interior is a carefully crafted design featuring several angles and lines that give the driver beautiful, intuitive touch points.

“If you’re driving a couple of hours a day, you don’t want busy or complicated,” Chun says. “You want simple – you want beautiful.”

Magic Magnets Give Buick Crossovers AWD Refinement

Drivetrain technology making all-wheel drive lighter, smoother and more responsive

DETROIT – When snow inevitably starts falling over the General Motors Proving Ground in Michigan this winter, Buick engineers will use the conditions to put the finishing touches on the Encore luxury small crossover. It arrives early next year as the brand’s first entry into the burgeoning small crossover segment.

Encore’s “Active On-Demand” all-wheel drive is designed to give the vehicle the fluid drive characteristics and sure-footed traction Buick drivers expect but in a smaller, lighter package. Unlike traditional systems that engage all four drive wheels after slip is detected, Encore uses a magnetic charge to engage a clutch at the rear axle preemptively when the vehicle is at rest because slippage is most likely to occur just as the vehicle begins to move. If no slip is detected, a computer control automatically disengages the preemptive torque to the clutch once the Encore is underway, returning the system to a primarily front-drive operation.

“A Buick all-wheel drive system has to deliver the best traction possible, and it has to do it in a way that’s totally imperceptible to the driver,” said Encore Chief Engineer Jim Danahy. “We engineered Encore’s lightweight, responsive and refined system to deliver on the expectations of demanding luxury buyers.”

Buick engineers used their experience developing an all-wheel drive system for the Enclave luxury crossover SUV and applied it to Encore’s smaller packaging. The Enclave uses similar technology. To fit Encore’s weight and space needs, engineers worked with BorgWarner to develop a new, more compact coupling for the rear axle.

Reduced weight benefits Encore’s handling, as well as fuel economy. With all-wheel drive, Encore’s EPA-estimated fuel economy is 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Beyond weight savings, the advantages of Active On-Demand all-wheel drive for the driver include rapid activation and deactivation, more control over the transfer of torque, more refined performance in tight turns and parking situations and better integration with safety systems like ABS and stability control.

“Technology is allowing us to translate Buick’s quiet, comfortable ride to smaller vehicles than we could before,” said Danahy. “This all-wheel drive system, like turbocharged engines and Buick QuietTuning technologies, allows drivers to experience that Buick DNA with unprecedented efficiency and maneuverability.”

According to the 2012 Harris Poll AutoTECHCASTSM Study, “familiarity with all-wheel drive continues to climb” and one third of all new car buyers would consider purchasing the technology on their next new vehicle. Consideration of all-wheel drive is greatest among luxury crossover/SUV owners, along with owners between 35-54 years of age. Among current all-wheel drive vehicle owners, 83 percent consider it an important feature for their vehicle.

In addition to the upcoming Encore and the redesigned 2013 Enclave, Buick offers all-wheel drive for the 2013 LaCrosse V-6 luxury sedan.

Buick is a modern luxury brand offering vehicles with sculpted designs, luxurious interiors with thoughtful personal technologies, along with responsive-yet-efficient performance. Buick is attracting new customers with its portfolio of award-winning luxury models, including the Enclave crossover, LaCrosse sedan, Regal sport sedan, Buick Verano sedan and the all-new 2013 Encore crossover. Metal Piece Found On Driveway Clue To Broken Transmission

Question 1
I own a 1998 Honda Accord with 189,000 miles. It looks great and has not given me any trouble since I purchased it in 2000 with 15,000 miles.
Yesterday when I was about to leave for work I put the transmission in reverse and it engaged. Then, I heard a clunk and the car moved about two feet and would not move any further. Also, I heard unusual noises I think from the transmission. I left the car in the driveway and a friend drove me to work.
After work I noticed fluid on the ground. I rolled the car back and found a round piece of jagged metal that appears to be aluminum in the puddle. There is a lot of fluid on the ground.
I called my repair shop to discuss what I found but they said that they need to look at the car before they can determine what is wrong and cost of repair. I totally understand that.
The car is in great condition. There is no rust. I have taken great care of it with oil changes every 3,000 miles. I also followed the service schedule in my manual. I believe the transmission needs repair. Do you think it is worth it? M.F., email
Answer 1
What the car is worth to you is a personal matter that only you can determine. I can with reasonable certainty say fixing the car will cost much less than purchasing a new one or even a two or three year old used vehicle.
As for what is wrong, more than likely a shaft or another part broke through the transmission case. If this is verified by your repair shop the transmission needs replacement and not repair. A technician would need to remove all the parts in the transmission and install them in a new case. This is not a proper repair as the parts in the transmission after all have 189,000 miles of wear. Not all of the parts will work once they are removed, and there are many.
More than likely your shop will provide some repair options. One might be to install a low mileage used unit from a salvage yard if one is available. Often when a car is in a rear-end collision the transmission is in good condition. Another option might be to obtain a salvage yard unit and overhaul it before installing it in your car. Yet another option might be to install a remanufactured unit from a reputable company that specializes in remanufacturing transmissions. This might be the best option.
Before making your decision on any of the options, consider the warranty and of course cost.

Oil Leak Needs Further Scrutiny
Question 2
My 2007 Audi A4 leaks oil. It has a 4-cylinder engine. At first I noticed a few drips on my garage floor but after a month there is a large oily stain on the floor about two feet in diameter.
I examined the engine and discovered a leak at the rear of the valve cover. In the past I have replaced valve cover gaskets but it’s been many years. I’m not afraid to do the work and I have lots of tools so I think I can replace this gasket.
Is there anything I should watch out for? D.J., email
Answer 2
Watch Out! A meteor might fall from the heavens and crush your car. On second thought a meteor smashing your car might be worth big bucks. Anyway, removing the valve cover to replace a leaky seal is not brain surgery. Since you have done it the past this should be a task you can handle. However, before you move forward with the repair, thoroughly clean the area of the leak. After it is clean wait a day or two to verify the source of the leak. The cylinder head might be leaking instead of the valve cover so make sure it is the valve cover.
If the head is leaking, let a pro tackle the work.

Troubled Transmission Fries Control Module
Question 3
The transmission in my 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 truck with a diesel engine began to shift erratically and the check engine light turned on in the dash. I checked the transmission fluid and it’s full. I took it to an auto supply store where an employee tested the computer. He found code 1693. He said that likely the electronic module needs replacing.
Is this something I can do? H.T., email
Answer 3
Sure you might be able to swap the module but the truck won’t operate correctly unless you have the equipment to program it. Additionally, it is possible something failed in the transmission resulting in a failure of the control module.
The transmission has electronics within the unit. If an electrical part shorted the event could damage the electronic control module resulting in replacement of both units. Better leave this job to a specialist.

Oil Pressure Adjusts Valves
Question 4
The check engine light turned on in my 2007 Cadillac Escalade. My repair shop did some tests and found a code that indicated a problem in the timing of the camshaft. They explained that oil pressure somehow controls the timing of the camshaft gears and that for some reason it is low causing an issue with how the camshaft works. They said that to find out the cause they must at the very least remove the oil pan to check the oil pump. I did not authorize the work.
In the meantime they changed the oil and poured in heavy oil to compensate for low oil pressure. They said the engine might need an overhaul but they won’t know for sure until they look inside it.
My vehicle has 110,000 miles. It has a large 6-liter V-8 engine. I have owned it since it was new. I have followed the recommended services in my owner’s book including oil changes when the oil monitor says it is due.
I’m upset over the fact my engine might need an overhaul or replacement as suggested by my garage. Does what my shop says make sense to you? D.R., email
Answer 4
Oil pressure does indeed have an effect on the movement of the camshaft to synchronize the opening and closing of the valves with the up and down motion of the pistons. When oil pressure is not within specifications the hydraulic pressure necessary to time the movement of the camshaft is off. As a result, the valves and pistons are not within timing specifications and the engine does not perform as designed.
Apparently, your shop has tested the oil pressure and determined it is low. This might be caused by excessive engine bearing wear, heavy deposits of sludge in ports in which oil flows or excessive wear of the oil pump or heavy deposits of sludge in the screen on the oil pump.
Since it appears that you rely on the oil monitor to alert you to change the oil this might not occur for a year depending upon driving habits. If this is true, it is possible deposits in the engine have caused this issue. Your next step is to get a second opinion from another repair shop but more than likely they will suggest an internal examine of the engine which will require removing the oil pan. Repair indeed might be to replace the engine.

Transmission Fails After Panic Stop
Question 5
I was traveling on the highway in my 2006 Mercedes-Benz ML500 and had to make a hard sudden stop at 65 mph to avoid a collision that had occurred between three cars in front of me. My car was not involved in any way. Once the tangled mess in front of me was cleared the transmission in my car would not engage. All I heard was a buzzing sound under the car.
I had it towed to the nearest repair shop where a technician found no physical damage. The wiring and fluid appeared normal but he did hear buzzing sounds form inside the transmission. He did some tests but his equipment could not communicate with the module that controls the transmission. He says there is damage inside that causes the buzzing sound, but his shop does not repair transmissions.
The car was towed to a dealership for further diagnosis. As of yet I have not heard from them. What do you think happened? Could a sudden stop cause a transmission to fail? What do you think is wrong? R., email
Answer 5
Thankfully you avoided a collision.
More than likely the troubled transmission is coincidence. Sudden stops do not cause transmission failure, but apparently inertia caused an excessively worn part to go where it shouldn’t.
Buzzing sounds are a clue that there might be a failed hydraulic pump or torque converter. A technician will likely remove the transmission pan to check for metal fragments. If he finds numerous ferrous fragments, the transmission needs major repair or replacement.

Water Leak Leads To Car and Dealership Problems
Question 6
The battery in my 2005 Ford Mustang GT was going dead every couple of days. I took it to a shop where a technician found the headlights were not turning off properly. He also found water in a junction box on the passenger side. He found a water leak and repaired it. He also replaced the carpet and junction box.
After the work the power door locks did not work. He did many tests and concluded that the box that he purchased from a dealership was not proper or needs reprogramming but the dealer says it does not need programming as it just needs to be plugged in. They insist he did something to cause the trouble. Now he is at a loss.
I need the car so I’m driving it until I have time to leave it with him. Do you have any suggestions? L.T., email
Answer 6
Put your pony out to pasture. All kidding aside, ask your technician to call another dealership. It’s likely the module he purchased needs reprogramming despite what he was told by the selling dealer parts department. Also, he should consider giving authorization to another dealership to do the reprogramming work if he does not have the equipment to complete the task.
