Black Smoke From Some General Motors Vehicles

If you own a 2009-2012 General Motors car or light truck with a 3.0 or 3.6-liter engine equipped with direct injection you may notice black smoke from the exhaust upon initial engine starts.  Never fear, General Motors says this is normal during cold engine starts.  The reason is a double blast of fuel to activate the catalytic converter.  It's common for the following vehicles to emit black smoke:

  • 2009-2012 Buick Enclaves, Cadillac CTS,, Cadillac SRX, Cadillac STS, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia.
  • 2010-2012 Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain
