Recall's Of The Day, July 19, 2012

Today, three recalls have been issued by NHTSA. One recall relates to improper tires on a Beetle.  Another is concern over improper labels.  And the last recall is over concern on a hatch in a bus.  Troubles never seem to cease.

Summary:
 VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 BEETLE VEHICLES. SOME VEHICLES MAY BE EQUIPPED WITH SUMMER TIRES THAT FAIL TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS 110 "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS" AND 139 "NEW PNEUMATIC TIRES FOR LIGHT VEHICLES."
Consequence:
 IMPROPER TIRES MAY LEAD TO THE TIRES BEING OVER-LOADED AND/OR UNDER-INFLATED, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
Remedy:
 VOLKSWAGEN WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND REPLACE THE NONCOMPLIANT TIRES, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN IN SEPTEMBER 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.

Summary:
 Paccar is recalling certain model year 2013 Kenworth T680 vehicles, manufactured from January 19, 2012, through May 15, 2012. The warning label located on the front of the upper bunk may deform after installation, making the text unreadable.
Consequence:
 If the warning label is not readable, the occupant may be unaware of the safety recommendations and be at an increased risk of personal injury in a crash or sudden vehicle deceleration.
Remedy:
 Paccar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the warning label in the affected vehicles. The safety recall is expected to begin during August 2012. Owners may contact Kenworth at 1-425-828-5440.

Summary:
 Turtle Top is recalling certain model year 2010 through 2012 commercial buses manufactured from April 1, 2011, through March 25, 2012, equipped with Specialty Manufacturing Inc. (SMI) Prolo roof hatches. Increased friction between the rear plate assemblies, p/no. 009327, and the nylon rear pop-up support, p/no. 008956, may result in an opening force of the Prolo roof hatches that exceeds federal standard requirements. Thus, these hatches fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 217, "Bus Emergency Exits and Window Retention and Release."
Consequence:
 In the event of an emergency, passengers' exit from the bus may be hindered possibly resulting in injury to the vehicle occupants.
Remedy:
 Turtle Top will notify owners. SMI will provide service kits along with repair instructions to dealers and owners, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during July 2012. Owners may contact turtle top at 1-574-831-4349 or SMI at 1-800-951-7867.
