Recalls Of The Day June 13, 2012

Courtesy of the National Highway Traffic Administration

Today there are two recalls. One is for a misstep at the factory.  Another is for incorrect information in an owner's guide.

Did you know that carmakers can voluntarily recall vehicles?  This regularly occurs but this action is coordinated with NHTSA.

Vehicle Make / Model:   Model Year(s):
     HONDA / CIVIC   2012
Manufacturer: HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)Mfr's Report Date: JUN 01, 2012
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 12V256000NHTSA Action Number: N/A
Component: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT
Potential Number of Units Affected: 50,190
Summary:
HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 HONDA CIVIC VEHICLES. DURING ASSEMBLY, THE PROCESS REQUIRED TO SEAT THE DRIVER’S SIDE DRIVESHAFT AND SET THE RETAINING CLIP WAS NOT COMPLETED. AS A RESULT, THE DRIVESHAFT MAY SEPARATE.
Consequence:
IF THIS OCCURS, THE VEHICLE WILL HAVE A LOSS OF DRIVE POWER AND MAY ROLL AWAY IF THE PARKING BRAKE HAS NOT BEEN SET WHEN THE GEAR SELECTOR HAS BEEN PLACED IN THE “PARK” POSITION, INCREASING THE RISK OF CRASH OR PEDESTRIAN INJURY.
Remedy:
HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE DRIVER’S SIDE DRIVESHAFT AND INSTALL A NEW DRIVESHAFT, AS NEEDED, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGINON, OR ABOUT, JUNE 21, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.

Vehicle Make / Model:   Model Year(s):
     SCION / FR-S   2013
Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.Mfr's Report Date: JUN 04, 2012
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 12V255000NHTSA Action Number: N/A
Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:OWNERS/SERVICE/OTHER MANUAL
Potential Number of Units Affected: 1,156
Summary:
TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2013 SCION FR-S VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM MARCH 22, 2012, THROUGH MAY 14, 2012. THE OWNER’S MANUAL CONTAINS AN INACCURATE DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTUAL OPERATION OF THE FRONT PASSENGER OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM. OTHER PORTIONS OF THE OWNER’S MANUAL, DESCRIBING THE AIR BAG SYSTEM, REQUIRE CLARIFICATION. AS SUCH, THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD (FMVSS) NO. 208, “OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION.”
Consequence:
IF A USER READS AND FOLLOWS INACCURATE OWNER’S MANUAL INFORMATION, THIS COULD LEAD TO AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY TO A FRONT PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANT UNDER CERTAIN CRASH CONDITIONS.
