Focus Marks Milestones as World’s Top-Selling Car and Ford’s 350 Millionth Vehicle Produced in 109-Year History

  • Ford Focus is best-selling car model in the world for the first half of 2012
  • New Focus built today in Thailand marks milestone as 350 millionth vehicle produced in Ford Motor Company’s 109-year history
  • Customers around the world are benefiting from One Ford plan, which is creating the industry’s freshest lineup with a full family of vehicles offering leading quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value
RAYONG, Thailand, Aug. 31, 2012 – Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) today celebrates the company’s 350 millionth vehicle – a Ford Focus, which is the world’s best-selling car for the first half of 2012.

Ford is celebrating the production milestone at its newest global manufacturing facility located in Rayong, Thailand, approximately 200 kilometers (120 miles) southeast of Bangkok. Ford Thailand Manufacturing (FTM) plant is a $450 million facility, opened in May to produce the new Focus, which also is built in four other countries. FTM represents the latest in Ford’s global manufacturing capabilities, with new stamping presses, flexible body shops and robotic capabilities that enable it to produce up to six different vehicles simultaneously.

“Producing 350 million vehicles is equivalent to producing one vehicle every 10 seconds for our 109-year history. If placed end to end, the vehicles would stretch to the moon and back – twice,” said John Fleming, Ford executive vice president of global manufacturing. “Producing this vehicle in Thailand also is significant. It underscores the power of our One Ford plan to deliver profitable growth with great products built in ultra-flexible and efficient facilities everywhere around the world.”

In addition to the manufacturing milestone, for the first six months of this year, Focus became the best-selling single car nameplate in the world, based on global data from IHS Automotive.
According to IHS Automotive, the Ford Focus sold 489,616 units in the first half of this year. The nearest competitor, Toyota Corolla, sold 462,187.

“Embracing its performance, value, versatility and fuel economy, the Focus is attracting many new customers to the Ford brand for the very first time, particularly in Asia where we are growing every day,” said Jim Farley, Ford’s group vice president for global marketing, sales and service. “The Focus is a winner on so many levels because it successfully provides customers with what they want most – a safe, smart, fuel-efficient, good-looking, fun-to-drive, affordable car.”
From Henry Ford to One Ford
Since the company was founded in 1903, Ford has led the industry with innovations such as the Model T, which helped foster the world’s love for affordable mobility. In its first half century as a company, Ford grew alongside the driving public, producing its 50 millionth vehicle – a 1959 Ford Galaxie – in slightly more than 50 years and generating legions of loyal Ford owners along the way.

In the five decades since, Ford has produced more than 300 million additional vehicles.

“Today, in the spirit of Henry Ford’s innovative drive, the One Ford plan is transforming modern-day Ford to compete everywhere in the world with a full family of global vehicles that offer leading quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value,” said Fleming.

As part of the One Ford plan, the company also is executing a One Manufacturing plan for lean, flexible production. It includes standardizing best practices, increasing production in growing markets and accelerating new vehicle introductions on fewer global platforms, which delivers the vehicles consumers want with quality, efficiency and profitability afforded by global scale.
By next year, Ford will build more than 85 percent of vehicle volume off nine core platforms. Also, in the next four years, Ford plans to have the freshest global vehicle lineup – with the entire product portfolio expected to be upgraded at least one time.

Asia Pacific leads the way
Asia Pacific is leading the way for growth as part of Ford’s One Ford plan to serve customers in all markets.

With $6.7 billion invested in the region since 2006, Ford is investing heavily and expanding aggressively to meet the needs of consumers here, who are expected to generate 60 percent of the industry’s future growth through 2020. Ford’s key investments and growth initiatives in Asia Pacific Africa include:
  • Launching nine new plants – six in China, two in India and one in Thailand – with the capacity to produce 2.9 million vehicles by mid-decade
  • Bringing more than 50 new vehicles and powertrains to market by mid-decade, including 15 vehicles to China by 2015, eight vehicles to India by 2015, eight vehicles to ASEAN and four vehicles to Taiwan
  • Having 95 percent of the region’s volume on global platforms by mid-decade
  • Doubling the number of dealerships in the region by mid-decade

Continental Develops Multimedia System For Fiat Group Automobiles

Technology at its best: Continental develops the new infotainment system for Fiat Group Automobiles.

Regensburg/ Wetzlar (Germany). The international automotive supplier Continental was commissioned by Fiat Group Automobiles to develop a new infotainment system. The system will be launched as a radio in its basic form but also as an advanced multimedia system (head unit).

The first Fiat model equipped with the Continental infotainment system will be the brand new Fiat 500 L, which is being produced in Serbia. The Continental infotainment system will then be rolled out across further models from Fiat/Chrysler.

“The order to develop an infotainment system for the Fiat/Chrysler model range worldwide is a clear sign of trust by the international automobile manufacturer in Continental’s innovative capacity, especially in the area of infotainment,” explains Kieran O’Sullivan, head of the Continental Business Unit Infotainment & Connectivity.

“Millions of vehicles are already connected with the outside world on the basis of our systems. For Fiat Group Automobiles, we are once again implementing the current market requirements in a highly competitive way on a standardized platform, with a focus on an ergonomic user interface for the latest functions in infotainment technology,” O’Sullivan continued.

The hardware and the possible functions
The head unit will start series production in July 2012. With this new system, which began development in December 2010, the driver has access to analogue and digital radio or navigation functions on a 5 inch touch screen. There is also an option to connect digital music sources via USB and to use the hands-free function for smartphones through a bluetooth-interface. The new head unit uses the Microsoft operating system Windows Embedded Automotive and features text-to-speech as well as voice recognition, allowing drivers to utilize functions of the infotainment-system without taking their hands off the steering wheel.

The Continental head unit is designed to allow for new software functions to be installed on the system after the start of series production. Thus the system can be adjusted to the changing preferences of the driver over the vehicle’s complete life-cycle. Additionally the system defines new ecological benchmarks: the Fiat Group’s eco:Drive, which will be integrated into the infotainment-system, can help the driver contribute to the reduction of consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 12% through analyzing driving parameters in real time (acceleration, deceleration, gear shift change and cruise speed) and giving suggestions for more eco friendly driving.

International development and production
The new infotainment system was developed at Continental locations in Wetzlar (Germany), Regensburg (Germany), Deer Park (USA), as well as Guadalajara (Mexico) and Singapore. For Fiat/Chrysler the production began in July 2012 in Brandys (Czech Republic), and will at a later date also take place at the Continental plant in Nogales, Mexico.

Delphi Launches Remanufactured Turbochargers with Latest Variable Technology

Warwick, UK – Delphi Product & Service Solutions is changing the turbocharger landscape with the launch of its remanufactured turbocharger program for popular light duty vehicle diesel and petrol applications. Available now, this programme provides the aftermarket an OE quality, green alternative in turbocharger replacement that works with both old and new technologies.

The current trend for engine downsizing to meet the latest emission standards, while still providing the customer with fuel economy and performance means a dramatic growth in production of diesel and petrol turbochargers. For the aftermarket, this represents a significant growth opportunity. Today, the market is predominantly serviced through new units, and is led by many turbocharger manufacturers and distributors operating a new-only policy when replacing failed variable geometry turbochargers due to the specialist nature of the repair.

“Garages can now offer a complete Delphi reman range of turbochargers to consumers, including variable geometry technology, and cover popular applications such as BMW, Peugeot, Renault and Volkswagen,” said Lúcia Veiga Moretti, president, Delphi Product & Service Solutions. “This is critical as garages service a wide range of vehicles on the road today and are looking to provide alternative choices to consumers.”

Turbochargers with variable geometry were developed to optimise the turbo for both low and high-engine speeds, thereby reducing traditional turbo lag, and improving fuel economy and engine performance.

Stringent Testing
All parts replaced on Delphi remanufactured turbochargers have undergone stringent testing to ensure they perform to OE specifications. During the remanufacturing process, the replacement components endure almost 30 different quality controls before the complete unit is provided a seal of approval.

Launch covers key European applications and training
Delphi’s initial launch covers key European applications, whether diesel or petrol. Rapid range expansion will increase parc coverage to 80 percent of the top failing models.

In conjunction with the product launch, Delphi has developed a hands-on training course for technicians detailing the principles of operations for turbochargers and the surrounding system components. The course includes best practices for diagnosing and identifying turbocharger failures, such as boost pressure and oil damage, as well as proper maintenance and installation techniques.
Delphi is also working towards the introduction of additional diagnostic support on its DS series for technicians diagnosing potential turbocharger failures. This solution will help pinpoint where in the intake circuit a fault has occurred as a turbocharger fault code may be caused by a faulty air flow meter, EGR valve or air leak.

About Delphi
Delphi is a leading global supplier of electronics and technologies for automotive, commercial vehicle and other market segments. Operating major technical centers, manufacturing sites and customer support facilities in 30 countries, Delphi delivers real-world innovations that make products smarter and safer as well as more powerful and efficient.
