Toyota to Export U.S.-Assembled Venza to Russia and Ukraine

Will Build on Record Export Numbers from U.S. in 2012

New York – Toyota today announced that it will begin exporting U.S.-assembled Venza vehicles to Russia and Ukraine in 2013. These shipments are expected to build upon Toyota’s all-time record export of more than 124,000 U.S.-assembled vehicles to 21 global markets in 2012, an increase of 45 percent over the prior year.

“We are proud that Toyota’s U.S. manufacturing operations are continuing to grow as a key supplier of vehicles for global markets, which is only possible thanks to the dedication and high-quality work of our team members here,” said Shigeki Terashi, president and COO of Toyota Motor North America, Inc. “We expect the export of Venza vehicles to Russia and Ukraine will help further solidify our U.S. manufacturing base.”

Once production begins in April 2013, Toyota expects to export approximately 5,000 Venza vehicles to Russia and Ukraine during the first year of sales. These vehicles will be built at the company’s Georgetown, Ky. plant, which employs about 6,600 team members and represents a $6 billion investment. The Georgetown plant is the company’s largest manufacturing facility outside of Japan.

Venza exports to Russia and Ukraine will ship from Brunswick, GA.

Recalls Of The Day, February 28, 2013

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been busy.  They have issued five recalls.  One recall is for exhaust system parts falling off a vehicle.  If that's not bad enough there are problems in the brake system of another vehicle.  If this isn't enough trouble the oil lines could pop on a vehicle and lay down a slick on the road which could impair other vehicles and cause fire.  One of the vehicles mentioned in this list could lose steering.  That could be interesting especially if the vehicle in near you.  Lastly a vehicle on this list could suddenly accelerate uncontrolably.  If you own one of these vehicles you better practice emergency procedures so you can avoid catastrophe.

GM Announces Widest Deployment of 4G LTE Services in Vehicles

Collaboration with AT&T begins with U.S. and Canada rollout in 2014

BARCELONA – General Motors today announced a broad global strategy to deliver a new generation of connected cars and trucks with embedded 4G LTE mobile broadband, the largest deployment in the automotive industry to date.

The first GM cars, trucks and crossovers to get 4G LTE will be most 2015 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac models available in 2014 in the United States and Canada delivered through AT&T. GM will announce more carrier and supplier relationships in coming months to expand 4G LTE capabilities in markets around the globe.

With mobile data speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G technologies, increased responsiveness, and the ability to support simultaneous voice and data connections, a built-in 4G LTE connection will enable advances in a wide range of in-vehicle communications and entertainment capabilities.

Expected benefits for GM customers could include in-vehicle Wi-Fi hot spots, new infotainment options like streaming video entertainment in the back seat, real-time updates and faster application downloads. These enhancements build on OnStar’s existing portfolio of built-in connected services, first introduced in GM vehicles in 1996.

The built-in 4G LTE structure is specifically designed for in-vehicle use as it is integrated into the vehicle’s electrical system and includes an external antenna to maximize coverage and connectivity. Customers will not be required to have a smartphone to use connected services.

“In addition to allowing consumers to bring in and connect to personal mobile devices, the vehicle will also act as its own mobile device, enabling embedded vehicle capabilities,” said Mary Chan, president, Global Connected Consumer, General Motors. “Turning this vision into a reality starts with enabling fast, reliable and responsive connectivity within the vehicle. Through this built-in 4G LTE connection we have the opportunity to reinvent the mobile experience inside a vehicle.”

Over time, applications of widespread in-vehicle 4G LTE connectivity will enable vehicles to interact directly with their environment to enhance safety, efficiency and convenience for drivers and passengers. 4G LTE will make services such as real-time traffic and navigation updates possible, pulling information from the cloud.

GM and AT&T will immediately begin work to develop 4G LTE connectivity for GM vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. AT&T’s 4G LTE network is expected to reach 300 million people in the U.S. by the end of 2014, and its network performance and deployment strategy have been lauded by industry analysts and other experts.

GM and AT&T will also work together on a broad ecosystem focused on developing new communication applications to enhance the driving and riding experience.

“While our 4G LTE network will provide fast, reliable mobile broadband for GM’s connected vehicles, we’re also looking forward to working directly with GM researchers and engineers as well as the developer community to invent new in-vehicle applications that will take full advantage of our powerful network,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility. Both GM and AT&T are leading innovators in their industries.

GM received more U.S. patents in 2012 than any other automaker as it continued to drive advances in performance, efficiency, sustainability and in-vehicle infotainment. GM’s OnStar enabled the world’s first connected vehicles 16 years ago, and delivers industry-leading capabilities, ranging from stolen vehicle assistance to voice navigation and live advisor support.

“As we implement 4G LTE connectivity into our vehicles the most important piece we will consider is delivering this technology to our customers in a safe manner, staying focused on reducing any related distractions,” said Chan.

AT&T maintains a long heritage of innovation at AT&T Labs. The company’s hands-on work with the developer community, centered in its AT&T Foundry facilities, has resulted in numerous innovations in mobile apps and network technology.

The widespread integration of 4G LTE into GM vehicles will enhance GM’s recently announced application framework and third-party developers program. In January, GM introduced a new set of vehicle application programming interfaces (APIs), which enable developers to build on GM vehicles’ infotainment systems, as well as a new flexible application framework that will allow drivers to add apps and infotainment features to their vehicles after purchase.

“Our commitment to 4G LTE strengthens our ability to collaboratively innovate with developer partners,” said Chan. “Developers will be able to take full advantage of 4G LTE speeds as they design vehicle-specific apps, and they can pursue development knowing that they’ll have a broad base of potential customers as connectivity is built-in across GM brands and regions.”

As 4G LTE networks expand globally, GM plans to work with additional carrier partners to enable connectivity in other brands such as Opel and Vauxhall. Additional details on availability and service options will be announced later.

Fusion Energi Lands Ford Atop List with Highest Number of 2013 Vehicles Qualifying for Faster Lane Access in California

  • The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has approved the all-new Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid for its carpool lane access program; this gives Ford, along with Toyota, more 2013 vehicles that qualify for the state’s high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes than any other automaker

  • Fusion Energi meets the long-distance challenges of California’s super commuters who also face increased congestion; idling in stop-and-go traffic is estimated to waste 1.9 billion gallons of gasoline annually

  • Ford Fusion Energi hits showrooms later this winter as Ford’s fifth new electrified vehicle to launch in the last 12 months, joining Ford Fusion Hybrid, Ford C-MAX Hybrid, Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid and Ford Focus Electric

DEARBORN, Mich. – Californians now have another Ford vehicle option to get them where they’re going even faster with the all-new Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, as the vehicle has been approved for use in the state’s high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes.

To earn access to these faster moving carpool lanes, vehicles must qualify for tax rebates through California’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Project, which is overseen by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). A vehicle that qualifies earns a special sticker that identifies it as having HOV privileges.

Ford Fusion Energi buyers are eligible to receive a $1,500 tax rebate – in addition to a $3,750 federal tax credit – making Fusion the third Ford brand vehicle to now qualify for California’s special financial and driving incentives, and putting Ford in the lead, along with Toyota, for having the most vehicles of any automaker allowed access to the state’s carpool lanes. Ford Focus Electric and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid also qualify.

The tax rebate and carpool lane access program are designed to promote reduced greenhouse gas emissions and consumption of less gas – making the three eligible Ford vehicles natural inclusions.

“That Ford has the most 2013 vehicles eligible for HOV lane access in the largest electrified vehicle market in the U.S. underscores our success in truly offering power of choice, especially when it comes to electric and hybrid powertrains,” said C.J. O’Donnell, group marketing manager for Ford Electrification.

To qualify for the programs, a vehicle must be classified by CARB as a super ultra-low emission vehicle and be certified by the U.S. EPA to offer fuel economy of at least 45 mpg on the highway.

Fusion Energi not only meets CARB standards but also has an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 100 MPGe combined– 108 MPGe city and 92 MPGe highway – along with a total range of up to 620 miles on one tank of gas and one full charge; Fusion has an electric-only range of up to 21 miles.

This means at least one leg of the average work commute – reportedly 20 miles each way – could be completed each day with Fusion Energi never using a drop of gas. A study by the United States Department of the Treasury estimates congestion consumed an extra 1.9 billion gallons of fuel in 2011, approximately 5 percent of all gasoline used.

In California, Fusion Energi is the ninth Ford vehicle to qualify for carpool lane access through CARB since 1993, with Focus Electric and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid being the most recent.

“Fusion Energi is Ford’s most fuel-efficient sedan and offers a top electric-only speed of up to 85 mph,” said O’Donnell. “Californians clearly appreciate the environmental benefit, too, which is why we are seeing the state’s programs embrace Ford’s electrified lineup.”

Programs like California’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Project are growing in number to encourage the use of vehicles that produce fewer emissions and use less gas. They range from the $3,750 federal tax credit owners may receive for buying Fusion Energi to a program in Ferndale, Mich., where drivers of hybrids that get 30 mpg or better in the city are allowed to park for free at city parking meters. Other states offering lane driving privileges for hybrid vehicle owners include Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia.

Delivering choice
Ford’s launch of the new C-MAX Hybrid, C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid and Fusion Hybrid this past autumn led the company to deliver record-setting hybrid sales in December, resulting in a 9 percent market share gain to 16 percent. In the same period, Toyota’s share of the hybrid vehicle segment fell 8 points, from 68 percent to 60 percent.

Then Ford delivered a record hybrid sales month for January, following record-breaking electrified vehicle sales in the fourth quarter of 2012. Fusion Hybrid saw record sales in January.

Fusion Energi figures prominently in Ford’s rollout of electrified vehicles and is helping the automaker sell these record numbers of hybrids. Ford now offers five electrified vehicles:

  • C-MAX Hybrid: EPA-estimated rating of 47 mpg city, highway and combined – up to 7 mpg better than Toyota Prius v – plus 50 more horsepower than the Toyota and 12 class-exclusive technologies

  • C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid: Best EPA-estimated combined miles per gallon equivalency of any plug-in hybrid, Ford’s first production plug-in hybrid vehicle has a city rating of 108 MPGe and 21 miles of all-electric range – more than triple Prius plug-in’s six miles – and an EPA-estimated gas plus electric range of 620 miles. The vehicle’s “real car” performance includes 195 horsepower (versus Prius plug-in at 134 horsepower), engaging driving dynamics and a quiet interior – all with a leading electric-only speed of 85 mph, more than 20 mph above the Prius

  • Fusion Hybrid: EPA-estimated rating of 47 mpg city, highway and combined – up to 6 mpg better than Toyota Camry Hybrid

  • Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid: EPA-estimated gas plus electric range of 620 miles, electric-only range of up to 21 miles, and EPA-estimated rating of 108 MPGe city, 92 MPGe highway and 100 MPGe combined

  • Focus Electric: America’s most fuel-efficient compact car, with an EPA-estimated rating of 110 MPGe city, 99 MPGe highway and 105 MPGe combined

Quiet Cabin Makes Buick LaCrosse a Better Listener

Speech engine picks up accents and dialects from IntelliLink voice commands

DETROIT – When General Motors speech recognition engineer Robert Sims worked to develop one of the industry’s first in-car hands-free calling systems years ago, his goal was to make the call quality clear enough that his wife wouldn’t hang up on him.

Today, Buick’s IntelliLink system can do far more than place a call, and QuietTuning technologies like those in the LaCrosse luxury sedan make using voice controls easier for owners regardless of marital or relationship status.

QuietTuning is Buick’s comprehensive engineering process to reduce, block and absorb interior noise. For LaCrosse, that means features like laminated window glass, triple door seals and liquid applied sound deadening.

“There’s definitely an advantage when we’re developing voice controls in a quieter cabin,” said Sims. “The system’s ability to hear a command relies on SNR, or signal-to-noise ratio. If noise is extremely low like it is in the LaCrosse, the user’s voice, or signal, can be lower. In other words, a LaCrosse driver can easily speak to the IntelliLink system at a normal, conversational volume.”

As someone who drives an 80-mile commute each day, quietness and minimizing distractions are a personal matter for Sims. That’s helped drive him to make Buick’s IntelliLink voice commands simple, intuitive and designed around the controls drivers need most.

With IntelliLink – standard on every 2013 Buick – drivers can use voice commands to control navigation and audio functions with the push of a button while keeping eyes on the road. With a smartphone paired, IntelliLink’s voice commands can even tune to a Pandora internet radio station or “like” a song.

How does it work? Using a microphone in the cabin’s headliner – optimally placed by Sims and his team – the system uses a speech engine to match spoken words to known voice commands. When the engine finds a match, that command is executed.

“We’ve also designed the system with speaker adaptation, which means the engine is trained for different accents or dialects,” said Sims. “It can begin to predict speech patterns based on those models. Your LaCrosse remembers your speech patterns even after the car is turned off and on, but it can also identify another user and predict his or her patterns as well.”

Computer Reset Often Cures Trouble
Question 1
The 4.0-liter engine in my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo idles rough and the check engine light is on.  This has been going on for about a month.  I took the vehicle to a repair shop where a technician replaced an oxygen sensor.  When I picked up the vehicle the check engine light was off but the engine still idled rough.  I drove about three blocks and the light turned back on.  I returned to the shop where the technician replaced another oxygen sensor and turned off the light.  When I returned the light was off but the engine did not run any better.  The technician told me to drive for a week and the engine should start to run better.  It didn’t but and the light remained off.

I went to another repair shop.  I explained what had happened at the first repair shop.  A technician found a code that indicates that the engine computer is faulty.  After doing several tests and checks he does not think this is the trouble.  He does not want to install a new computer unless he is absolutely sure this is the cause.  So far he has checked the spark plugs, coils, fuel mixture, road tests and did a number or visual exams of wiring connections plus more but the code for the engine computer keeps popping up.
I don’t want him to replace the computer if he is not sure it is the cause of the trouble.  What are your suggestions? R.H., email

Answer 1
I’m flattered by your request.  Also, it appears your technician is convinced the engine control module is not the cause of the rough idle condition and is not in parts replacement mode.  Sometimes resetting values in the engine control module cures unusual symptoms.  Since it appears your technician has the tools to do the work ask him to step back, take a breath and consider this suggestion.  It might resolve the issue.

Upset Over Fuel Consumption
Question 2
Doctor, I have a friend who is very unhappy with the mileage he is getting on his 2013 Escape. It’s 21 miles per gallon with lots of rural driving.  This brought up a question.  Who is responsible for calculating the mpg numbers that the manufacturers advertise?  S.L., email

Answer 2
Manufacturers have laboratories that are certified and monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency.   Tests are conducted by technicians and engineers employed by the carmaker under the watchful eyes of an EPA engineer.  Evaporative emissions such as vapors from plastic, paint, gasoline, other fluids, glues, sealants and upholstery are monitored in an enclosure specifically designed for this purpose.  Engine exhaust emissions and fuel economy are measured in a specifically designed laboratory for these tests.

The EPA sets standards and carmakers design vehicles to meet them.  The fuel economy in real world daily use on the road typically is under the estimated fuel economy by about 10 percent listed on the vehicle’s window sticker.  This is a marked improvement over testing methods used a few years ago.  To learn more there is a wealth of information on the Environmental Protection Agency’s web site at http://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy.

I don’t know what engine is in your friend’s Escape but according to the EPA the average estimated fuel economy is about 25 or 26 miles per gallon depending upon the size of the engine.  It seems your friend’s vehicle is pretty close to their fuel economy estimates.

Leaky Sensor No Big Deal Yet

Question 3

My 1998 Altima SE with 30,000 miles is said to be in showroom condition.  Since 2000 the car is driven less than 1000 miles a year.  It was purchased new at the dealership where I take it every year for service.  Recently, the supervisor reported a leak from the speed sensor at the manual transmission.  He said that since the car is seldom driven it is not critical that I have this replaced.  It would cost over $200 to fix.
What is your opinion?  Would the check engine indicator show if it were a problem?  K.W.S., email

Answer 3
At this time it is not a critical issue.  If the sensor fails the check engine light should illuminate.  Additionally, more than likely the speedometer will go bonkers.  Also, since there is a leak of gear oil from the transmission drips may appear on surfaces where the vehicle is parked.  If this occurs have the issue repaired as a loss of lubricant in the transmission could cause excessive wear resulting in major work on the unit.

Leery Over Future Of RAV4
Question 4
My 2005 Toyota RAV4 stalled.  I had it towed to my local garage where a mechanic found the coil failed.  He also found a failed engine temperature sensor and had to replace the radiator cap because it was leaking.  He needed to add nearly a gallon of antifreeze, too.

My RAV has 110,000 miles.  Up until now I haven’t had a bit of trouble with it.  I purchased it new with the idea of keeping it for 10 or 15 years.  Now I am afraid a lot more is going fail in the near future.  I don’t want to be stranded somewhere.  What else will go wrong?  Should I keep it or get rid of it?  M.G., email

Answer 4
I’m sorry your car is giving you trouble.  You have been blessed with 110,000 trouble free miles.  This is unusual.  I’m also sorry about the performance of my automotive diagnostic crystal ball.  It says that it is impossible to determine exactly what will fail in the future.  It does say your car is getting older and parts will fail.  It also says along its journey parts will fail more often as it ages.  Through its mystic powers it clearly says that if the engine and transmission have received regularly scheduled and frequent preventive maintenance these major parts will perform for many years to come without major repair.  However, it says parts such as sensors, ignition coils and gaskets might fail due to age and mileage.  It also says that parts in the suspension and steering will need replacement and eventually wear will take over the engine and transmission.  It does not say whether you should get rid of the vehicle or if you should hang on to it.  It leaves this decision up to you.

Thanks for all of your great questions.  Dr. Gizmo can’t wait to answer more.
