Renewable Energy Charging for Electric Vehicles

Delphi's electric vehicle technology is featured on Green Energy Ohio tour

While some people are just now becoming comfortable with the idea of electric and hybrid vehicles, Delphi has been researching and developing safe, high-performance, reliable products for vehicle electrification for more than 20 years.

"Delphi's heritage of innovation for hybrid and electric vehicles spans many years," said Randy Sumner, director, Global Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Business & Technology Development, Delphi Packard Electrical/Electronic Architecture. "Electrical systems for hybrid and electric vehicles have very unique performance requirements, and engineering for safety, reliability, and peak performance is a complex process. With our broad experience and global resources, Delphi is an industry leader in designing, validating, manufacturing, and commercializing power electronics and energy storage systems for hybrid (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs)."

Delphi will showcase one of its many groundbreaking hybrid and electric vehicle products during the GEO (Green Energy Ohio) EV Tour Del Sol, June 4-8 in Ohio. The tour is the state's first road rally designed to bring together policymakers, students, and green businesses to ignite interest in Ohio's EV infrastructure and legislative initiatives.

"Many consumers are now willing to try alternative ways of saving resources, but for electric vehicles to really be successful, they need to be accessible and practical for the average consumer. This tour is a great chance to generate public and legislative interest in these issues for Ohioans," said Alex Delavan, manager, government/technical affairs, Delphi Packard Electrical/Electronic Architecture.

Delphi's Portable Charger On Tour
As part of the tour, an electric vehicle equipped with Delphi's Portable Electric Vehicle Charger will visit green businesses and renewable energy charging stations in five metropolitan areas within Ohio. Tour stops will be open to the public and will include a workshop, expert speakers and test drives. Tour sponsors at each location will also provide on-site vehicle charging and activities to inspire charging infrastructure development, and opportunities to learn about emerging EV technologies.
GEO's EV Tour Del Sol is planned for June 4-8 in Ohio.
Delphi Portable Electric Vehicle Charger with 120V/AC/15A, Level 1 service
The Delphi Charge Coupler Connector with Cable integrates into 120VAC (Level 1) or 240VAC (Level 2) charging stations or portable cordsets.
The Delphi Charge Inlet is compatible with any SAE J1772 coupler interface.
The Delphi Wireless Charging System offers EV charging without plugs or cords. Electric power flows upward from a power source resonator to a power capture resonator installed on the vehicle.
Planned tour stops include:
  • Columbus Electrical Trades Center (Monday, June 4)
  • Cincinnati Joint Apprenticeship Training Center (Tuesday, June 5)
  • University of Toledo Scott Park Campus (Wednesday, June 6)
  • Warren Joint Apprenticeship Training Center (Thursday, June 7)
  • Cleveland Indians Progressive Field/Case Western University (Friday, June 8)
A premier sponsor of the tour, Delphi will offer innovation experts and information on its hybrid and electrical vehicle products at the tour stop in Warren on June 7. In addition to demonstrating its portable charger — on-board the touring EV — Delphi will introduce visitors to its suite of hybrid and electric vehicle charging products:
  • Delphi Portable Electric Vehicle Charger
  • Delphi Charge Coupler Connector with Cable
  • Delphi Charge Inlets
  • Delphi Wireless Charging System
Delphi Portable Electric Vehicle Charger
Featured on the touring electric vehicle, Delphi's Portable Electric Vehicle Charger is a portable charging cordset that enables EV owners to charge their vehicles anywhere from an available (household) 120V AC service.

The Portable Electric Vehicle Charger is a complete charging system, delivering a robust, reliable, Level 1 charge to both battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). Designed to current industry standards, the system fits conveniently in the trunk of a vehicle and can be customized for global applications based on local electrical supply voltage and grid plug interface. The charger includes four components:
  • In-cable control box utilizing charge station technology
  • 20 feet (6 m) of cable
  • Cord connector
  • Vehicle inlet with wiring to the on-board vehicle charger
The in-cable control box offers several convenience and safety features which allow the EV owner to easily monitor the charging process. A contact monitoring circuit verifies integrity of the AC charging path during use. If a nuisance trip of the charger circuit interrupt device occurs during charging, the unit will automatically test if conditions are acceptable for restart and resume charging. A built-in self-check feature eliminates the need for monthly testing by the user.

The sealed cord connector protects the internal components such as terminal interfaces and crimps from the environment. It offers user-friendly convenience with an ergonomic handle, rubberized grip, and knurled button for easy, non-slip plug-in and activation. The vehicle inlet provides a hinged cover with a gasket to protect the receptacle from the environment while drain holes prevent water from collecting in terminal cavities.

Other EV Charging Technologies from Delphi
Rounding out Delphi's suite of hybrid and electric vehicle charging products are three user-friendly products with designed-in safety features.

The Delphi Charge Coupler Connector with Cable offers a reliable interface for providing a charge to BEVs and PHEVs. Engineered to provide a robust, reliable charge every time, the coupler connector is sealed to protect internal components from the environment. It features an ergonomic handle with rubberized grip for left- or right-handed users and a knurled button for easy, non-slip latch activation and deactivation. A time-delay disconnect safely prevents the user from disconnecting during the charging sequence.

Designed to support both Level 1 and Level 2 charging of BEVs and PHEVs, the Delphi Charge Inlets provide an industry standard vehicle interface for convenient electric vehicle charging. The charge inlets feature:
  • compression limiters to prevent over-tightening during assembly
  • protective rubber boot at the rear of the inlet to prevent wiring harness damage
  • drain holes to eliminate water collection in terminal cavities
  • terminal crimps are isolated and sealed to protect the inlet from the weather
  • power terminals with integrated plastic tips to prevent electrical arcing if
  • disconnected during a charge
  • plating on terminals designed to withstand 10,000 mate/unmate cycles
Delphi's revolutionary Wireless Charging System, currently in development, will automatically transfer power to a vehicle using a convenient, wireless energy transfer system. The hands-free charging technology recharges an electric vehicle's battery without wires or cords using highly resonant magnetic coupling − the magnetic field from a source resonator on the ground linked with the capture resonator mounted underneath the vehicle. The system will fully charge an electric vehicle at a rate comparable to most optional level 2 residential plug-in chargers. The wireless charging system is easy to use — automatically activating when the driver parks above a charging pad — and can be installed on a garage floor or embedded in a paved parking space. The hands-free system requires no plugs or cables, is weather-resistant, and low maintenance for commercial and public installations.
